Drive Traffic to Online Niche Sites – Core Domain Naming Strategies
Today, we discuss naming your "new-born baby"!
The Core Domain Naming Techniques are discussed below you may wish to use:
Be Memorable but Meaningless
- One approach is to make your domain name creatively memorable but which may not or does not indicate the content of the site.
- Purpose is to psychologically and deliberately induce high recall and mindshare of your domain name.
- But bear in mind that high recall and mindshare of your domain name may not be enough to attract click through rates.
- For instance, you might have a site named "blackocean .org". Readers will remember the names, but on first glance at the search returns, they won’t know that your site is about shark conservation.
Be Short, Direct & Purposeful
- Alternatively, you could use a more direct (but rather un-glam) domain name such as "SharkConservation .org". Now doesn’t this tells a whole lot more than blackocean?
Capitalize It
- Notice too that I tend to "Cap" the S and the C.
- This is for cognitive recognition purposes and it helps readers to decipher the words more effectively
Where Your Core Keywords ARE Your Domain Name
- You may choose "AntiqueTeakFurniture .org" for the obvious reason that your site covers all about antique teak furniture content.
- Obviously, naming your domain becomes comparatively easier with niche markets as your subject matter and your keywords are more focused.
Search Engines have Preferences too?
- Apparently, it seems that search engines give comparatively greater preference to domain names ending with .com, .org and increasingly, .NET as well.
- But for the "human" perception, .com implies commercial sites, and .org gives the perception of an official, authority site.
- However, we should note that authority sites are sites with great amounts of good content and it takes a lot more than a domain name to give authority. Well, maybe, not all Dots are created equal in the eyes of search engines!
Design Your Website & Domain Name for Humans
- Let’s face it, if humans can find your site, the search engines will surely do as well!
One thing you will learn over time is that search machines don’t like froth. They crawl for relevant terms, so having a more meaningful and direct domain name is important.
Forget the Glam, it’s the money that counts!
